The market for premium over-ear headphones is crowded and filled with cushioned acoustic drivers that’ll all block out some amount of the outside world. But only a select few satisfy the uppity audio geeks, and Sony’s XM4 Wireless Headphones is a prime example.

Sony’s upgraded iteration of this model, the XM5, is SPY’s favorite over-ear headphone of the year, but its predecessor is also built and equipped for superb performance.
This pair is built with Edge-AI technology for optimizing music based on its noise levels and cadences, and the Dual Noise Sensor technology has an audio frequency range of 4-40,000 Hertz for plenty of capacity regardless of what your Spotify Wrapped looks like.
They have up to 30 hours of battery life and Touch Sensor controls for answering phone calls or ordering around a voice assistant with crystal clear demands. It has smart Speak-to-Chat technology that reduces environmental sounds and volume during conversations, and it’s engineered for precise voice pickup even in noisy environments.
It also has wearing detection that pauses playback when the headphones are removed, a nice feature given that earbuds have conditioned most users to expect it.
